Podiatrist or Chiropodist?
A podiatrist and chiropodist both concentrate on the treatment of feet, ankles and some knee problems. In the United Kingdom, the term chiropody is widely used to refer to more routine foot care, and podiatry is often used to describe care requiring greater expertise and education.
It’s not just the name that has changed though. Podiatry is a continually evolving profession, the extensive training given to students over the 3 or 4 years of their full-time course and the continuing education after graduation enable podiatrists to treat a vast array of foot and lower limb problems.
Due to changes in legislation, common professional titles like ‘podiatrist’ and ‘chiropodist’ are now protected by law. Anyone who uses a protected title must register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
When looking to make an appointment the phrases and letters you should look for are:
• Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
• Member of The College of Podiatry MCPod
