Frequently
Asked Questions

+ What is a podiatrist?

Podiatrists assess, diagnose and treat people with problems of the feet, ankles and lower limbs. The title ‘Podiatrist’ (and ‘Chiropodist’) is legally protected and can only be used by someone who has attained a qualification in this field following 3 years of study at a School of Podiatry. They are required to continue learning throughout their professional practice. They must also hold registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). The term ‘Chiropody’ is an historic term which mainly referred to the treatment of skin and nail conditions of the feet. Over the past 30 years the scope of practice of podiatrists has expanded to cover more advanced procedures and includes: management of lower limb pains, gait analysis, biomechanics and orthotics, local anaesthesia and nail surgery, diabetic foot health, paediatrics as well as general foot care. Alongside this extended more specialist practice, the profession has adopted the modern term ‘Podiatry’, which is recognised internationally within healthcare.
